BalBo on the Boxing Ring
July 09, 2018
Boxers, muay thai fighters, MMA fighters test their strength on the balance board.
Penultimate boxing and fitness center Elorde Boxing Gym hosted its annual MMA and Muaythai event – the Venum Ultimate Knockout Challenge – last May 26 and June 2 at the Flash Grand ballroom of the Elorde Sports Complex in Paranaque. For this 20th season, BalBo Philippines shared the ring with the Elorde Team as one of the latter’s sponsors.
The open competition featured amateur fighters who came from different gyms and training centers all over the country, with some foreign participants. Competitors ranged from as young as eight years old to as old as forty. Each age bracket was subdivided into weight categories.
In-between fights, BalBo Balance Boards substituted boxing gloves as the fighters’ opponent, as they tested their core strength and stamina. Some spectators also joined the fun. The sturdy boards withstood the attempts and accidents from the lightweight to the heavyweight division fighters.
BalBo Co-Founder France Abesamis noticed a difference across the varying martial art disciplines. “It seemed that a lot of muay thai fighters tend to get on the balance boards a lot faster and easier… It was refreshing to see new athletes from other types of sports try out and actually be fond of this activity.’
WBO International Featherweight Champion and one of BalBo’s most recent ambassadors Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo also graced the event and showcased the fruits of his labor on the balance board. Mark is currently on his nth week doing his BalBo 12-week challenge. BalBo has been challenging various Filipino athletes to maximize not only their core strength, but also the discipline and consistency they put into their craft.
The event was also co-presented by Tripe M, Powersox, Suncoast, Taiche, and Fit & Right.
Balbo Philippines would like to thank Ms. Cucuy Elorde, Ms. Frances Arbie Magsayo, Mr. Mark ‘Magnifico’ Magsayo for the warmest welcome and the rest of Elorde Boxing Gym Company.
